Norfolk Southern's Birmingham to Meridian Main

This program shows over twenty-four hours of action on Norfolk Southern’s busy line between Birmingham, Alabama and Meridian Mississippi. Trains were videotaped between Meridian and York, Alabama, on both sides of the Alabama – Mississippi line, in October of 2012. Thanks to the 2006 agreement between Kansas City Southern and Norfolk Southern that gave NS a thirty percent share of KCS’s Meridian to Shreveport Speedway and the right to connect with Union Pacific at Shreveport, the train count through Meridian has been growing as Union Pacific shifts their intermodal traffic between the West Coast and Southeast to the Meridian gateway, and the economy continues to slowly recover from the great recession. This route via KCS at Meridian and UP at Shreveport known as the Meridian Speedway is the shortest route from Atlanta to the West Coast. Today this historic former Southern Railway main line hosts many long intermodal and manifest trains, some with distributed power, along with Amtrak’s Crescent. UP, KCS, and NS power is freely mixed on the trains that flow between NS in Atlanta, and UP in Shreveport or KCS in Dallas. Norfolk Southern's Birmingham to Meridian Main is 65 minutes in length. This DVD can be watched with or without narration.

CSX on Duff Mountain north of Knoxville DVD

There are few manned pusher districts left in the eastern U. S. One of these is on Duff Mountain north of Knoxville in eastern Tennessee. This program shows over twenty-four hours of operations on Duff Mountain – CSX’s crossing in the Appalachian Mountains over the divide between the Cumberland and Tennessee River watersheds in November of 2011. Duff Mountain is on CSX’s KD Subdivision that stretches between Corbin, Kentucky, and Etowah, Tennessee. Part of CSX’s former Louisville and Nashville main line between Cincinnati and Atlanta, this busy line is near capacity with unit grain and coal trains, manifest trains including one pair that used to take the former Clinchfield to the Southeast, and a pair of priority intermodal trains in CSX’s new double digit number series.  This DVD can be watched with or without narration.

CSX on Sand Mountain in Northern Alabama

CSX’s climb up Sand Mountain as it crosses the Appalachian Mountains in northern Alabama on CSX’s S&NA North subdivision is one of only a handful of manned pusher districts left in the Eastern U. S. This program shows over twenty-four hours of action in November of 2011 on CSX’s S&NA North subdivision on and around Sand Mountain, which begins at Cullman, Alabama, fifty-two miles north of Birmingham. CSX’s S&NA North sub between Nashville and Birmingham was the busiest part of the Cincinnati to New Orleans main line of the Louisville and Nashville, and today is part of CSX’s busiest north-south traffic lane between the Midwest and Southeast. The one point one percent climb for southbounds up Sand Mountain was double tracked a decade ago and a manned pusher station was then added to assist heavy southbounds up the hill. As part of what CSX calls their Southeast Corridor, the freight train count on this line has more than tripled in the past fifty years as CSX’s other Midwest to Southeast traffic lanes are now at capacity.  This DVD can be watched with or without narration.

Southeast

I will be videotaping in the Southeast for about one month.  Locations and times will be determined after I have explored the various places that I would like to videotape.

NS Atlanta to Birmingham Main

Norfolk Southern’s former Southern Railway main line between Atlanta and Birmingham is quite a mountain railroad. Known as the East End District, this busy line crosses a southern extension of the Blue Ridge near the Georgia-Alabama border where we videotaped. With UP using KCS’s Meridian Speedway as a shortcut for intermodal traffic between the West Coast and Atlanta and new assembly plants opening up in the South, intermodal and auto traffic has been growing rapidly on this line in recent years.   “NS Atlanta to Birmingham Main” shows over 24 hours of traffic on Norfolk Southern’s East End District between Atlanta and Birmingham in the spring of 2008. “NS Atlanta to Birmingham Main” is 70 minutes in length.  The DVD version of this program has the option of being watched with or without narration.

Flomaton, Alabama - CSX Hot Spot

One of the most fascinating small town junctions on the far flung CSX system is Flomaton in southeast Alabama.  Flomaton is just north of the Florida state line and 58 miles east of Mobile.  In this town of 1600 where CSX still has a small yard, the CSX main line from Birmingham and Montgomery joins the CSX line from Jacksonville and Pensacola.  All trackage here is former Louisville and Nashville.  The CSX main line then continues west to Mobile and on to New Orleans.  This program shows over twenty four hours of action on CSX’s M&M Subdivision between Flomaton and nearby Atmore in October 2006.  It will also show how traffic on this line has rebounded since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast and severed this line west of Mobile for nearly six months.  This program was shot only seven months after through service was restored on this line west of Mobile. 70 minutes.  The DVD on this program has the option of being watched with or without narration.
