NS Bement to Decatur - Heart of the Former Wabash
The 20 miles of double track between Bement and Decatur in central Illinois was the busiest section of track on the former Wabash. At Bement the line from Chicago joined the line from Detroit. Just west of Decatur the lines to St. Louis and Kansas City went their separate ways. Today this funnel has twice the number of freight trains that it had during Wabash days and is a part of NS's busy automotive artery from Detroit to St. Louis and Kansas City. Kansas City Southern 2003
Few railroads have undergone as many changes in the past decade as has the Kansas City Southern. During that time, the KCS's Meridian to Dallas Line has become part of a major transcontinental corridor, and KCS has acquired a share of the largest Mexican Railroad and access to Mexico via Laredo.
