Old timers would not recognize the way that the Union Pacific Marysville subdivision looks today.  This line stretches from Topeka, sixty-eight miles west of Kansas City, to Gibbon, Nebraska where the triple track main to North Platte begins.  UP’s Kansas City main today is two main tracks on wide centers with centralized traffic control as compared to the single track CTC line with 110 car sidings as late as the early 1970s.  With little straight track until its gets close to Gibbon, most of this line is quite different from UP’s Omaha main with its long tangents up the North Platte Valley.  The St. Joseph and Grand Island which UP had a difficult time maintaining control of due in part to the restrictions in their charter against building branch lines, is a busy main line today with at least half of the trains being coal trains to and from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming.  During the previous decade almost as many trains would head southeast at Gibbon onto the Marysville sub towards Kansas City than proceeded straight on the main line to Omaha.  But these are not normal times and the coal traffic is way off with the low price of natural gas and bloated utility stockpiles due to a warm winter.  This program shows over twenty-four hours of fast paced action on UP’s still busy Marysville Subdivision both sides of Fairbury, Nebraska in April of 2016. Union Pacific's Marysville Subdivision is 77 minutes in length and it can be watched with or without narration.

Refineries and chemical plants along the Texas Gulf Coast stretching from Orange, Texas on the Louisiana border to Kingsville, just below Corpus Christi produce over two-thirds of the country’s  petrochemical output.  The railroad heart of Texas’s Chemical Coast is the two rail lines that run between Houston and Beaumont, a distance of eighty five miles.  This program shows over twenty-four hours of action on both of those lines in late April and early May of 2017 – first the former Missouri Pacific line, now UP’s Beaumont Subdivision, and then the former Southern Pacific line, now UP’s Houston sub.  Kansas City Southern trains running between Laredo on the Mexican border and Shreveport, Louisiana or Jackson, Mississippi have overhead rights on these lines as does BNSF, both from conditions in the UP-SP merger in 1996.  UP began directional running on these lines in 1998 as part of their improvements to get out from under their meltdown in Texas which lasted nearly a year.  Train movements on the Beaumont sub are nearly always eastbound including Amtrak’s Sunset Limited.  While movements on UP’s Houston sub are predominately westbound, the directionality is complicated by trains running both ways from Englewood and Settgast Yards to Dayton where UP’s busy Baytown branch begins and where BNSF has their key yard for sorting manifest traffic in the Houston area.  In contrast to the Beaumont sub, the Houston sub has many customers requiring service from locals. This video is a two disk set and its length is 2 hours, 39 mintes.  This program can be watched with or without narration.

For nearly 100 years the Missouri Pacific and the Southern Pacific’s Cotton Belt subsidiary competed for business between the St. Louis gateway and the Southwest, sharing each other’s track between East St. Louis and Dexter, Missouri. Today, Union Pacific owns both lines and traffic has begun growing again after dropping during the great recession, spurred on by unit trains of crude oil headed to refineries on the Gulf Coast. Trains are getting longer and heavier with some having radio controlled distributed power fore and aft. Foreign power abounds as UP and its eastern connections pool power on many trains. In addition BNSF has overhead rights on this line to East St. Louis. This program shows all the trains in October of 2013 for over twenty-four hours on the critical single track portion of UP’s Chester Subdivision south of East St. Louis between Illmo on the Mississippi River and Dexter in southeast Missouri. Dexter is where the lines divide and directional running to Texas begins. The traffic on this line is extremely varied with manifests toting chemicals from the Gulf Coast, trains carrying autos and auto parts for auto distribution centers and assembly plants in Texas and Mexico, the Texas and Mexico intermodal fleet to and from Chicago, and many types of unit trains clogging this single track section as you will see. This is the same stretch of track covered nineteen years ago in our program titled “River Wars I – the Mississippi River”. "UP - Illmo to Dexter, MO" is two hours and 24 minutes in length and is a two disk set. It can be watched with or without narration.

Meadow Valley Wash, which begins fifty miles north of Las Vegas, is the defining feature of Union Pacific’s historic, 102 year old, Salt Lake Route between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. This defile, together with adjacent Clover Creek Canyon, was the only reasonable route for a rail line from Salt Lake City to Southern California through the many mountain ranges in southern Nevada. This program shows 28 hours of action in the most rugged part of Meadow Valley Wash, the eastern or geographically northern end of the canyon between Caliente and Lyman Crossing, in June of 2007. Train lengths have increased and UP’s newest high tech diesels get down on their knees on the one and a half per cent grade and eight degree curves in this most picturesque and flood-prone part of Meadow Valley Wash.
