This video documents the recent increase in trains on the former Chicago and North Western’s Twin Cities Line, the one-time route of the “400s”. This increase is due to the amazing growth in recent years of hydraulic fracturing or fracking for oil and gas in this country. Nearly seventy percent of the sand used for fracking comes out of Wisconsin and UP handles the largest share of that sand. This historic line is now the property of Union Pacific and until recently was really treated as a secondary line by UP. Today the Adams Line sees more freight trains and much more tonnage than any time since the end of steam in the 1950s. Experts argue that this line has been saved twice in the past decade – first by the addition of a Triple Crown RoadRailer, and then by the frac sand boom. UP has been gradually rebuilding this line and today it hosts a mix of sand and other unit trains, manifest trains, and the Triple Crown train. Although the sand business on this line has receded somewhat from its peak in 2014, UP still puts on quite a show with their long trains and distributed power. This program shows parts of three days and one night of action on UP’s Adams and Wyeville Subdivisions often referred to by railfans as the Adams Line between Wyeville and Ashippun, thirty-eight miles west of Milwaukee in April of 2015. This DVD is 76 minutes in length and can be watched with and without narration.

In early 1998 Union Pacific converted its former MP and SP main lines through Arkansas to directional running. The ex-Cotton Belt main handled southbounds between the upper Midwest and Texas, while the ex-MP main handled mostly northbounds. BNSF trains run on these lines - a condition of the UP-SP merger. This program shows 24 hours of action on each of these lines in October 2004. All kinds of leased, borrowed, and run-through power is on these trains. There are few lines in the country that handle more chemicals, plastic pellets, autos, and auto parts than UP's Arkansas mains. 1 tape/2 DVD set. 2 hours, 18 minutes. The DVD on this program has the option of being watched with or without narration.

One of the real success stories in railroading today is the former Texas and Pacific, now Union Pacific, west end from Fort Worth to El Paso. Originally conceived as this country’s second transcontinental railroad, this line ended up as a 611 mile long branch line to El Paso when Southern Pacific arrived in El Paso first. The takeover of the SP by the UP in 1996 changed everything as UP completely rebuilt this part of the former T&P and began routing traffic from Memphis and Dallas-Fort Worth bound for southern California via the former T&P. Today this line handles more trains and much more tonnage than anytime in its history including World War II. This program shows over 24 hours of action on the former Texas and Pacific between Abilene and Sweetwater in west Texas in May of 2009. “UP’s ex-T&P Main west of Abilene, TX” is 65 minutes long and sells for $30.95 plus $5 for S&H. This DVD has the option of being watched with or without narration.

The Union Pacific main line up the Platte River Valley west of Council Bluffs to the junction with the line from Kansas City at Gibbon is one of the most historic and best known rail lines in this country – the first track to be laid by the first transcontinental railroad. This line is still one of the most important and busier rail lines in the U.S. for freight traffic in spite of the recent recession and downturn in coal that has battered U. S. railroads the past decade. The track structure that we will see today is dramatically different from that spindly single track laid on a dirt roadbed in 1866. Today’s trains are even longer and heavier than those seen during our last visit to this historic line in 2010. Once best known as the Overland Route, this line today is part of UP’s heavily trafficked Central Corridor. This program shows over twenty-four hours of action on UP’s Columbus and Kearney Subdivisions on both sides of Grand Island in April of 2016. UP's Historic Council Bluffs to Gibbon Main is two hours and thirty minutes in length and can be watched with or without narration.

Union Pacific’s spectacular trackage around Redding in Northern California, is part of their so-called I-5 Corridor which stretches from Los Angeles to Seattle. Once part of Southern Pacific’s Shasta Division, the UP main around Redding covers a variety of terrain – the winding and deep Sacramento River Canyon, high bridges, and some high speed running through the foothills south of Redding, for the lumber drags headed to Southern California and the intermodal trains to traverse. This program shows how traffic on UP’s I-5 Corridor is doing since the UP takeover of the SP eleven years ago by showing all the trains for over 30 hours both sides of Redding on UP’s Valley Subdivision in June of 2007. “UP’s I-5 Corridor around Redding, CA” is 62 minutes long. The DVD on this program has the option of being watched with or without narration.

One of the most remarkable mountain grades in the West is Union Pacific's line through Willamette and Pengra passes in the Cascades southeast of Eugene, Oregon. For 42 miles the grade on this former SP line ranges from 1.5 to 1.7%. This is the longest sustained helper grade on the UP system today, although the helpers now are radio controlled distributed power units. The scenery on this line is easily the equal to that on Tehachapi or Cajon. This video shows the trains and operations on UP's remarkable line through the Cascades in July of 2002. 88 minutes.
