Russell Yard, just west of Ashland, Kentucky on the Ohio River, and 142 miles east of Cincinnati, was the heart of the former Chesapeake and Ohio. The 29 miles between Big Sandy Junction where the Big Sandy Sub diverged from the main line and headed south to the western Kentucky coal fields, and NJ Cabin where the lines to Cincinnati and Columbus divide, is still mostly triple track and was the busiest part of the C&O. Original C&O signal bridges still guide the trains on this heavy-duty section of track. Russell Terminal, the largest yard complex on the C&O system sat in the middle of that section of track. This program shows over 24 hours of heavy duty action in October 2006 between RJ Cabin at the west entrance to Russell Yard and NJ Cabin where the lines to Cincinnati and Columbus divide. This two and three track main isn’t as busy as it was in C&O days, but still handles nearly 30 trains on a good day including locals and Amtrak’s Cardinal.

This video shows three full days and a night of awesome action on CSX's Alleghany subdivision between Clifton Forge, Virginia and Hinton, West Virginia in April of 2003.  The scenic Alleghany Subdivision crosses the Eastern Continental Divide in the Allegheny Mountains on the Virginia - West Virginia border.  This spectacularly engineered line with many double track tunnels and huge fills was the heart of the former Chesapeake and Ohio and it carried a huge volume of coal, merchandise traffic, and passengers to Washington, D.C., Richmond, and the port of Newport News.  Today, this 130 year old line with its 0.57% ruling grade against loaded coal and grain trains still carries many high tonnage trains across the Eastern Continental Divide to Newport News and other points in the Southeast.  93 minutes.

The original New York Central line across upstate New York between Albany and Lake Erie at Buffalo is certainly one of the more historic and influential rail lines in this country. Today CSX is the owner and operator of this celebrated line. This program shows over twenty-four hours of fast paced action in July of 2015 on the former New York Central, nee Penn Central and Conrail water level route west of Rochester, New York between the junction with the former West Shore Railroad bypass around Rochester at Chili and South Byron, just east of Batavia on Bergen Hill. This is part of CSX’s Rochester Subdivision that extends from Rochester to Buffalo. CSX has operated their share of Conrail for nearly sixteen years and now has their own stamp on this historic line. There have been many changes to the makeup of the trains and operations on this line since our last look fifteen years ago. CSX’s two track main line across upstate New York carries almost all of their traffic between the New York City metropolitan area and the Midwest including the recently added crude oil trains for terminals and refineries in Albany, New Jersey, and adjoining Philadelphia. Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited and Empire Service trains also grace this line. This DVD is a 2 disk set. It is 1 hour and 55 minutes in length and can be watched with or without narration.

This video shows over twenty-four hours of action on the former Louisville and Nashville, now CSX, S&NA North Subdivision which runs from Nashville, Tennessee to Birmingham Alabama, a distance of two hundred and five miles.  This is part of CSX’s most important north-south traffic lane between Chicago and Florida which they have nicknamed the Southeast Corridor.  Trains were videotaped south of Nashville in south-central Tennessee, between Cornersville and Dellrose.  This part of southern Tennessee is full of winding valleys and high ridges as the tracks pierce the edge of the Appalachian Plateau and Tennessee’s Southern Highland Rim between the Cumberland River at Nashville and the Tennessee River at Decatur, Alabama.  There is even a fifteen hundred foot long tunnel here although it is inaccessible for videography.  At the time that these trains were videotaped in late April of 2017 CSX was a couple of months into the Hunter Harrison era where dramatic changes in train operations were taking place with many hump classification yards and intermodal terminals being closed and trains combined into 10,000 foot monsters.  As an example, two pair of intermodal trains have been added since our 2011 visit to this line but one pair will be re-routed via Atlanta only a week after our visit.    In spite of the train consolidations, the freight train count on this line is nearly triple of what it was fifty years ago. Length = 61 minutes.  This program can be watched with or without narration.
